Dialectic Journal 2/15

“The first bomb, the first explosion, burst in our hearts. We are cut off from activity, from striving, from progress. We believe in such things no longer. We believe in the war.”

1.This quote in the book describes the way the young soldiers feel towards the way the war is molding them. The war is essentially dehumanizing them. Also the fact that they are all around 21 years old they really had no life before the war. They went to school and buddies and girls friends put nothing permanent. While other allies and enemies and life’s. They are married some to have children. The ending of the quote also explains how now the only focus for the characters is the war. Nothing more. Nothing less.

2. To me this quote represents the war taking over the soldiers life. The are so young and should not be fight for their country at such a young age. Also they are being forced to only focus on the war. They can not have an outside life besides the war. Also during the war the young scared soldiers are being trained to be cold blooded murderers. To me this is wrong and it is almost denying them rights. This interesting me because I can not see how people can just kill another human being with no hesitation. How. I could not do that. Although if I did not then he will kill me. Overall what I have read in the book the only real thing that is coming out of the war is death.
